Album Review: Coheed and Cambria - 'The Color Before The Sun', Released 16 October 2015 via 300 Entertainment

Coheed and Cambria - 'The Color Before The Sun'
Released 16 October 2015 via 300 Entertainment

Coheed and Cambria is a well-established band by now. But for those who have been familiar with their concept albums based on comics’ scenarios from their frontman: this album is a bit different as it is a stand-alone.

'The Color Before the Sun has been recorded live in Nashville with minimum overdubsis' is a statement you can read about the album on numerous blogs. You may agree or not that the product delivered sounds rawer or not, but you cannot disagree that 'Island' kicks off the album in great style with a very catchy tune.

I have not followed this band very closely but it was great to be reacquainted with Sanchez' lead vocals style. Claudio sings very well and is a big part of why this album is radio ready beyond the indie stations network only.

Nicely produced by Jay Joyce there is a variety of styles featured on this LP. Prog Pop, Punk Pop anthem tunes and more intimate songs such 'Ghost' with its acoustic intro or 'Peace to Mountain' which concludes the album.

But not all is atmospheric and 'You Got Spirit Kid' demonstrates that Coheed and Cambria can deliver a few punchy but melodic home truths to its listeners. Efficient backing vocals, strong guitars and aerial music make this album special. It also grows on you gradually as you get to know it better. The last time I experienced this was a Jimmy Eat World album - not a bad benchmark hey?

BODY COUNT (featuring Ice-T) inks world-wide deal with Century Media Records

The highly controversial and iconic, BODY COUNT (featuring Ice-T on vocals), has officially inked a world-wide deal with Century Media Records and will begin tracking their highly anticipated new, full-length offering with Will Putney (Miss May I, Upon A Burning Body). Putney also tracked the group’s last effort, Manslaughter, which caught the entire genre’s immediate attention with its sheer abrasiveness and unabashed brutality.

Ice- T states: "It’s cool to be a member of The Century Label Group alongside such a lot of well-established metal artists. With our last album Manslaughter, we tested the waters and got a great response from the fans and critics. Now it’s time to go kill it and make a more aggressive album and keep the BODY COUNT style intact. Producer, Will Putney (Miss May I, Upon A Burning Body), is like a member of the band and has an excellent ear. He’s a great producer because he captures the true essence of our band’s sound. Once we are done writing the song it’s his job to step in and make it sound better. He helps move the record in the right direction, were anticipating working with him again. “Once the records done, were going to shoot a lot of music videos and perform spot-dates on certain tests, etc.”

This is the group that dropped hip-hop attitude into heavy metal and hard rock music before Rage Against The Machine, Limp Bizkit, Linkin Park and Hollywood Undead made records, despite nary an ounce of rapping over their mosh-pit inducing songs. Body Count is a full on metal band, fronted by a legendary rapper who drops knowledge, violent stories and verbal middle fingers, with a bellowing growl descended from some of punk rock’s most pissed off screamers.

Ice-T and cofounder/lead guitarist Ernie C have perfected their mix of thrash, punk and bottom heavy doom across five albums, hitting a zenith with the unstoppable Manslaughter, backed by bassist/songwriter Vincent Price (with Body Count now for nearly 15 years), drummer Ill Will (joined in 2009) and new guitarist Juan Garcia of EVILDEAD. They embody the monumental Southern California tradition of street born punk bands like Suicidal Tendencies combined with the aggressive aural napalm of Slayer. From the punk bite of their gold debut through the metallic triumph of Born Dead (1994), Violent Demise: The Last Days (1997) and Murder 4 Hire (2006), to the all encompassing Body Count vibe of Manslaughter, which merges the strengths of the band’s entire catalogue.

Driven by the same iconoclastic, antiauthoritarian and pimp-turned-poet mentality that made Ice-T a gangster rap pioneer, a platinum artist from the streets and a household name in film and television before “rapper/actor” was a commonly used term, Body Count flipped the script with the same tenacity when they bumrushed heavy metal. The first rumblings of Body Count were heard in the eponymous song unleashed on Ice-T’s gigantic O.G.: Original Gangster album in 1991, which hit stores just two months after Ice’s first major movie role in the modern crime classic, “New Jack City.” The fierce thrash of the “Body Count” anthem put people on notice that the Megadeth cap Ice-T wore on MTV wasn’t for show: aggressive heavy metal and hardcore is in his blood.

BODY COUNT line-up:

Ice-T – vocals
Ernie C – guitars
Juan Garcia – guitars
Vincent Price – bass
Ill Will – drums

Album Review: The Qemists - 'Warrior Sound', Released 4 March 2016 via Amazing Record Co

The Qemists - 'Warrior Sound'
Release: 4 March 2016 via Amazing Record Co

Warrior Sound is the name of the album and The Qemists is the name of the band, Rock oriented Dance Drum’n’Bass with a pinch of Electronica is the music style and altogether this does provide one of the most exciting and explosive music cocktails I have come across in a while.

Is it Heavy Dance or Hard Core Electronica? I don’t know and I don’t really care. The boys from Brighton (UK) have so much energy that their highly infectious tunes have been trotting in my head for a while now. Setting up the tone with 'Our World' - the intro - they quickly follow with 'Run You', the current single which provides the ideal anthem for those who like their electronic beats strong and in your face. The voice from Kenta is solid and funnily enough if I was to make a comparison I would say: think about Billy Talent on a dance floor.

The whole and entire album is an exciting and energetic patchwork, but there is a perfect alchemy between Electronica, Rock and Hip Hop all along. Anger will steer your senses towards a chapel of powerful and melodic choruses while 'New Design' provides some short respite in the first part of the song before making you jump up and down in your living room.

From 'We are the Problem' to 'No Respect' there is avalanche of sound, a series of uppercuts which are very difficult to avoid. You may get knocked out by 'Let It Burn' and its staccato dialogue between the acidic riffs and the vocals. 'Push the Line' on the other hand is almost radio friendly, but again: this is no Kylie Minogue here. You have to get your feet dance ready for this one too.

'Warrior Sound' is a super album. The title song is excellent too and gradually embarks you on a journey to music power. Those guys are damn good and they provide a refreshing and current sound. They will get far.

MAINLAND debut new single; "Beggars"

MAINLAND debut new single; "Beggars" premiering on The Wall Street Journal Speakeasy. Read what The Wall Street Journal Speakeasy says about it: "The pop-rock group Mainland delivers a simple but powerful message with their new song, “Beggars”: Don’t stop, don’t give up."

Ecstasy and sorrow, post-punk and pop, east and west - all those times when you’re caught in the middle, there’s Mainland. They are the soundtrack to moments of freedom and darkness. Taking a nod from society’s fellow black sheep (think David Lynch, William Eggleston, and Depeche Mode), Mainland arrives with "Beggars," an enigmatic call to arms with one simple message: "Don't stop, don't give up."

Premiering exclusively on The Wall Street Journal's Speakeasy, the song was inspired by frontman, Jordan Topf's late night rides on New York City subways. “I was just looking at all of the people on the subway and thinking about how I fit into all of that,” he told Speakeasy in a recent interview. “I wanted to sing to people that are maybe doubting their dreams.”

Led by enigmatic frontman, Jordan Topf (Vocals, Guitar) and comprised of Corey Mullee (Guitar, Synth) and Alex Pitta (Bass) Mainland arrived with their Girls Unknown EP (2013) and followed soon after with their second independent release, Shiner EP (2014) produced by Jim Eno of Spoon. Describing late night tales of gritty New York City streets, the band quickly gained a name for themselves with praise pouring in from tastemakers like NYLON, SPIN, Interview Magazine, BrooklynVegan, Consequence of Sound and Rolling Stone.

Meanwhile, Mainland kept busy securing opening spots with Catfish and the Bottlemen, The Colourist, Drowners, Strange Talk, etc and shared festival stages with The War on Drugs, Of Montreal, and Torres. Following the success of the Shiner EP, the band signed to 300 Entertainment (Meg Mac, ASTR, Alex Winston, Young Thug, etc) packed their bags and traveled west to the hills of California. Armed with their 35mm cameras, and void of inhibitions, the boys left behind the comfort of their home studio to record with Kevin Augunas (Cold War Kids, Edward Sharpe & the Magnetic Zeros) at Fairfax Recordings (formerly Sound City).

The result was their Outcast EP- an expansive collection of tracks, including their new single, “Outcast” - a disenchanted tale that was born (surprisingly) under the bright, shining lights of Los Angeles. “I was walking around Rodeo Drive, estranged from NYC...” muses Topf. “Maybe it was my current outlook on the struggles I was facing, but I was reflecting on moments where I'd felt like an outcast in life and in a new city like Los Angeles. A city of sunshine and broken Hollywood dreams.”

"Beggars" is the first single from the bands debut full length, Night Trials, due for release later this year via 300 Entertainment. From the eclectic bell hits of “Destination Weddings,” to the sombre rolling tones of “A Bit Out of Time,” Mainland’s new release, Night Trials is a journey through life’s fun and melancholy moments - the ones that you’d probably like to forget, but never will; they are your purgatory. They are all the beautiful places you’ve been, all the strange places you are bound to end up, and everywhere in between.

Coheed and Cambria announce new tour dates w/ Saves The Day and Polyphia

Fresh off a huge headlining tour which saw them play venues like Madison Square Garden in support of their new record, Coheed and Cambria are pleased to announce today upcoming tour dates with Saves The Day and Polyphia.

Kicking off in Seattle this September, the tour takes the band through U.S. markets including Austin and New Orleans, with a couple of stops in Canada and closing out at Starland Ballroom in New Jersey. The band will also be touring through the UK this August, appearing at Leeds and Reading Festival, with additional dates with La Dispute and mewithoutYou.

Coheed and Cambria’s ten song album, The Color Before The Sun was released in October 2015 via 300 Entertainment, and marks a bold departure for the NY-based band. It was their first non-conceptual album, pausing the beloved Amory Wars, a seven-album science fiction saga that also bore a comic book empire, in favor of a more personal outing. “It’s very much a time capsule of my last two years,” Claudio Sanchez said in a Mic.com interview. “I created The Amory Wars in 1998 because at the time, I didn’t understand what a frontman or a singer entailed. And I was sort of afraid to share my stories, and I didn’t want my stories to be judged. So I created fictitious ones to essentially hide behind.”

Rolling Stone declared The Color Before The Sun “a dramatic departure,” Noisey said the new album proves “there are no boundaries for a Coheed and Cambria album” and Alternative Press, in a four-star review, added “the album pops and pulsates with signature Coheed wails and riffs.” The Nerdist, who premiered the band’s ode to the ‘80s video for “You Got Spirit, Kid”, said the new music “features much of what has made Coheed and Cambria a force for the last two decades.”

The Color Before The Sun was Coheed and Cambria's 6th consecutive Top 10 Billboard charting album, and their third to debut at #5 on the Billboard top current chart with 32,000 units sold. The record is available now via 300 Entertainment and can be purchased on iTunes, Amazon and GooglePlay. A limited edition, deluxe box set featuring two hardcover books, four different pieces of music housed in a die-cut slipcase and a bevy of exclusive content is available via www.coheedandcambria.com.

PARADISE LOST Sign with Nuclear Blast

Iconic UK metallers, Paradise Lost, have signed a worldwide deal with German-based metal powerhouse Nuclear Blast! Formed in Halifax, West Yorkshire in 1988 and still boasting 4 of its 5 original members, the band are widely-credited with co-founding the gothic metal genre with their sophomore album, 'Gothic' (1991). Through the years, Paradise Lost have changed their style effectively and reinvented themselves again and again. They elbowed their way from their original melodic death metal sound on their debut, 'Lost Paradise' (1990) to the classic 'Icon' (1993) and more experimental 'One Second' (1997). Finally they went back to the roots with their current release, 'The Plague Within' (2015) achieving some of the best reviews of their career.

Vocalist Nick Holmes commented: "Paradise Lost's career has run alongside Nuclear Blast Records since the label began in the late 80's. And as huge fans of original death metal, we still have the majority of the label's first releases from those very early days. It's pretty incredible to see how the label has become a real force in metal music over the years, both in Europe and America and now, nearly 30 years later, in a new chapter for the band, it's exciting for Paradise Lost to be a part of Nuclear Blast!"

Nuclear Blast owner Markus Staiger adds: "As a fan from day one I've been following Paradise Lost ever since their death metal era, but have also enjoyed watching them grow into something even bigger and so unique. They defined and later on re-defined the gothic genre and always delivered the most dark and memorable songs. It's a great pleasure to finally welcome the band to the ever-growing Nuclear Blast family! Needless to say that we're very much looking forward to this partnership!"

Paradise Lost will be playing at renowned Catton Park based metal festival; Bloodstock Festival, on August 13th where they will be playing the main stage alongside the likes of Gojira, Mastodon and Fear Factory.

Paradise Lost are: Nick Holmes | Vocals Greg Mackintosh | Lead Guitars Aaron Aedy | Rhythm Guitars Steve Edmondson | Bass Waltteri Väyrynen | Drums

CONCRETE MASCARA: Perennial Disappointment Album From New Jersey Power Electronics Act Out Now

Malignant Records presents the new Perennial Disappointment album by punishing New Jersey power electronics act CONCRETE MASCARA, the album now streaming in its entirety and available to the public.

Perennial Disappointment is a perfectly engineered and concise declaration of arrival that should be a revelation for those that consider the power electronics genre to be one of stagnancy and one dimensionality. The sheer violence of this recording is astounding, and it stands as one of the most unnerving and visceral releases ever under the Malignant banner.

Undergo deconstructive surgery to CONCRETE MASCARA's Perennial Disappointment HERE.

Since 2011, CONCRETE MASCARA - comprised of Andrew Wilmer, Frank Cordry, and Jack Scanlan -- has been sharpening their skills across various formats and releases, pushing the envelope of intensity and extremity as they quickly ascended the ranks of American power electronic acts. From the dystopic atmosphere of Perennial Disappointment opener, "Flesh Of This World," and postmortem ambience of "Mouth Of Flies, Tongue Of Maggots," to the traumatizing and unmitigated physicality of "Utopian Nightmare," "Defined By Absence," or "Delusion Of Sacrifice," Perennial Disappointment is rife with urgency and tension, where caustic, distortion filled frequencies meet slashing, blown out noise, hyper-rhythmic pulsations, and venomous, dueling vocals.

Corbu get shimmery with new track, ‘Battles’

Debut album, Crayon Soul due August 5th, 2016
via 3 Beat (EU) & Big Picnic (US)

New York neo-psych band Corbu are streaming ‘Battles,’ the new single from their forthcoming debut album Crayon Soul, out August 5th 2016. ‘Battles’ rides an insistent bass groove through a kaleidoscope of vocal harmonies, broken synths and reverbed-out guitars, and captures the spirit of their collaboration with Dave Fridmann (Tame Impala, MGMT, The Flaming Lips), who mixed the band’s self-produced album.

Much of Corbu’s music is inspired by the fuzzy, transient experience of memories and dreams, which bleeds into the colorful, psychedelic artwork that frontman Jonathan Graves creates. As the band wrote the music for Crayon Soul, a story began to emerge, pulled from the band’s collective subconscious and inspired by animated sci-fi like Fantastic Planet, Interstella 5555 and Adventure Time. Jonathan says: “When we wrote the story for the album, a whole universe opened up for us. We referenced it constantly while finishing the songs and mixing them with Dave, and each piece of artwork we made is a snapshot from the ‘movie’ of Crayon Soul.”

Crayon Soul follows two acclaimed EPs, We Are Sound and Everything You Imagine Is Real, which garnered praise from the likes of NYLON, Stereogum, The Guardian, NME and more, as well as capturing the attention of Jessie Ware, who personally requested the band to remix her song ‘You & I (Forever)’.

WHORES. ENTER STUDIO, BEGIN WORK ON ALL NEW LP

Atlanta power trio WHORES. have entered Parhelion Studios with producer Ryan Boesch (Helmet, Fu Manchu, Melvins) this week to begin work on an all new full length due out later this year. "We've been working on writing an oppressively heavy record for the last few months here in ATL," says frontman Christian Lembach. "I think I've chained together like a thousand fuzz pedals at this point. Our homie who recorded Clean, Ryan Boesch (Melvins, Helmet, Fu Manchu, Foo Fighters, etc.), will be manning the helm for us again for the new one, and we're SO ready to blast super hard. Tons of crummy Instagram videos to follow!"

The band has also announced its plans to participate in the 2016 AFTERSHOCK FESTIVAL this October, playing alongside the likes of TOOL, PRIMUS, DEAFHEAVEN and BARONESS. "Beyond flattered to be a part of Aftershock Festival this year. Our life partners in Red Fang played last year, and we're super humbled to be a part of this awesome lineup. Surrounding tour dates will be announced soon."

The yet to be titled new effort, their first for eOne Music, will be the follow up to the highly buzzed about LP Clean (2013), which was widely cheered by critics. Also recorded by Boesch, the record sold out within a month, prompting the band to quickly release a second pressing. Clean is now on its fourth pressing. The band made headlines while supporting RED FANG last year in support of that release.

Formed in 2010, Atlanta, Ga. noise merchants WHORES. have quickly become infamous, thanks to their crushing live shows and no-holds-barred punk rock attitude. The band signed to Brutal Panda Records in 2011 to unleash their ferocious debut, Ruiner. Recorded at The Factory in Atlanta, Ruiner. features five crushingly heavy tracks of pissed-off noise rock for fans of Helmet, Pissed Jeans, Harvey Milk and The Jesus Lizard.

Since their inception, the band has toured throughout the U.S., playing shows with Torche, Iron Reagan, Deafheaven, Floor, Retox, Kylesa, The Atlas Moth, Zozobra, Royal Thunder, Fight Amp, Lo Pan, Red Fang, Coliseum, Obliterations, Black Tusk, The Sword, Melvins and Creepoid.

The band has garnered much attention as one of the best new acts in the noise rock scene. Spin Magazine voted WHORES. as one of the “must-see” bands at the 2014 SXSW and named Clean in the top 10 of their 20 Best Metal Albums of 2013. "We were in other bands. Now we're in this band," says the band. "Soon we will all be deaf. Commercially moribund, second wave, first class, good times, bad vibes."
